 Deep Tissue
Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue, affecting not only muscles but also tendons and connective tissue (fascia). It releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow, compressive strokes and deep finger pressure in the contracted areas. Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic patterns of muscle tension using slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the length the muscles. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue.

Why get a Deep Tissue Massage?
It feels good and it is beneficial to your health. Deep tissue techniques get to the source of long term muscle imbalances, tightness and compensation patterns. When muscles are stressed, they block oxygen and nutrients, leading to inflammation that builds up toxins in the muscle tissue. A deep-tissue massage helps loosen muscle tissues, release toxins from muscles and get blood and oxygen circulating properly.
Deep tissue massage focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage.

However, within 24 – 48 hours you should feel more space and less tension in the muscles.
Because many toxins are released, it's important to drink plenty of water after a deep-tissue session to help eliminate these toxins from the body.

 Neuromuscular Therapy
Neuromuscular Theraphy

Neuromuscular Therapy is the utilization of static pressure on specific Myofascial points, or trigger points, to break cycles of spasm and pain. This technique manipulates the soft tissue of the body (muscles, tendons and connective tissue) to balance the central nervous system. In a healthy individual, nerves transmit impulses to the body very slowly. Injury, trauma, postural distortion or stress cause nerves to speed up their transmission, inhibiting equilibrium and making the body vulnerable to pain and dysfunction. It is therefore necessary to stabilize low levels of neurological activity to maintain normal function and overall health. Pain results when any or all of the following conditions occur:

Schematic Diagram of a Trigger Point
  • Ischemia (lack of blood supply to soft tissues which causes hypersensitivity to touch)
  • Trigger Points (highly irritated points in muscles which refer pain to other parts of the body)
  • Nerve Compression/Entrapment
  • Postural Distortion
  • Biomechanical Dysfunction
Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a very specialized form of manual therapy. An NMT therapist is trained in the physiology of the nervous system and its effect on the muscular and skeletal systems. NMT therapists are educated in kinesiology and biomechanics and typically work in a clinical or medical environment.

 Sports Massage
Sports Massage

Sports Massage is typically used before, during training, and after athletic events. The focus is on specific muscle groups and treatment of repetitive motion injuries related to sports activities. Each sport and athletic event uses specific muscle groups in a different way. Sports Massage may include assessment, hydrotherapy, massage techniques, and stretching/maintenance techniques that promote greater athletic endurance, lessen chances of injury, and reduce recovery time. Combined sessions of sports and Thai massage provide the best of massage techniques and deep leverage stretching. Benefits include injury prevention, enhanced energy, reduced muscle tension and inflammation, increased flexibility and optimal performance.

Purpose of Sports Massage
The main purpose of sports massage therapy is to help alleviate the stress and tension which builds up in the body’s soft tissues during physical activity. If minor injuries and adhesions occur due to over-exertion, repetition or overuse, massage can break them down quickly and effectively. For more serious conditions, I team with medical professionals including doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors. I have worked on athletes of all ages from teens to seniors, a wide variety of sports, and all levels of fitness including weekend warriors to elite, professional, and Olympic athletes.

Common conditions which benefit from sports massage:
  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Achilles Tendonitis
  • Tibial Stress Syndrome (Shin Splints)
  • Hamstring/Quadriceps pull/shortening
  • Ilio-Tibial (IT) Band Syndrome
  • Piriformis Syndrome/Sciatica
  • Low back contraction/pain
  • Tennis Elbow/Golfers Elbow
  • Rotator Cuff strain
  • Frozen Shoulder
 Thai Massage

Thai Massage

Thai Massage is traditional bodywork and medical technique from Thailand, with Chinese and Indian influences. It integrates the best of yoga stretching and acupressure massage. Yoga-type postures plus applied pressure allow for maximum stretch. Practitioner uses feet, hands, elbows, and knees to assist client in deep leverage postures. Simultaneously, pressure is applied directly to acupressure points along energy pathways in the body. Unlike most types of bodywork, Thai Massage uses pressing, not stroking techniques.

Thai massage increases the elastin in the connective tissue, resulting in increased range of motion and softening of tissue damaged by injury, trauma, or stress. It is adaptable to a wide range of flexibility and body types. It is ideal for stretching large muscle groups (back, legs, and hips) and opening tight shoulders.

Clients wear loose fitting clothes and sit or lie on a floor mat. Sessions can be a 15 – 30 minute warm-up/assessment prior to massage or a full 1-hour of stretching. Athletes can enhance performance by combining deep stretching of a Thai session with deep tissue massage. Clients describe feeling open, energized and deeply relaxed after a Thai session. You just relax and breathe while the practitioner does the work for you!

Benefits of Thai Massage:
  • Eases tension, pain and stress
  • Helps balance and align the neuromuscular system.
  • Excellent assessment tool for range of motion and determining source of muscular imbalances
  • Increases flow of energy (Chi) and opens blocked energy channels
  • Increases circulation of blood and lymph
  • Aids in removing toxins; enhances oxygen and nutrient flow to the muscles
